Philip Gates' preference for tonality with an edge is found in both sonatas - they lean towards Latin-American rhythms- combining lyricism with astringency in equal measure. The shorter pieces are inspired by folk song, jazz, etc. Listen to soft shoe for a flavour. Ian Clarke (Flute), Thomas Kelly (Clarinet), Janet Way (Flute) and Roy Willox (Alto-Saxophone and Clarinet) are accompanied throughout by the composer.
